Kids Fun 101: Truffula Trees

When my friend asked me to bring Oreo cookie pops to her daughter’s birthday party, I could’t resist turning them into Truffula Trees for a little Kid Fun 101 ~ especially with the release of The Lorax Movie, which we happened to love!

Truffula Trees

They’re actually quite easy to make and better yet, there is NO BAKING REQUIRED!

Oreo Cookies

I doubled my recipe, because of the number of guests they were having and used both golden and chocolate Oreo’s; double stuffed.  One package yields approximately 22 – 24 cake/cookie pops at the end of the process.

Food Processor

All Oreo’s need to be crushed for this recipe, so…into a mini chopper or food processor they go.  However, if you’re using golden & chocolate Oreo’s, keep them separated for varying flavors or combine them for a cookies n’ cream affect; the preference is yours.

Kid Tip: if you have active kids & a little extra time, place the cookies into a large Ziploc bag & let them crush them inside the closed bag; they’ll love the process!

cream cheese

Pour your crushed cookies into a bowl and add 4 oz. of softened cream cheese per package of cookies (i.e. that means room temperature softened, not microwave softened).

confectioner's sugar

Add 1/2 cup of confectioner’s sugar, per package of cookies.

milk

Add 1 tablespoon of milk, per package of cookies.

electric mixer

And mix until all of the ingredients are moist and sticky.  Note: You do have work this for a bit, it’s not an immediate sticky mess :) .

no bake cookies

Here is where I make my kids wash their hands again :) !  Now, roll the dough mixture into cookie balls, approximately 2 inches in diameter.  Place them on to a lined cookie sheet & put them into the refrigerator to set for at least an hour.  They need to be cold and firm before you can turn them into Truffula Trees.

cake pop sticks

Use cake pop sticks of varying lengths for your Truffula Tree trunks; I like the thicker sticks that can be found in crafting stores.  Then, wrap them with yellow & black pipe cleaners.   A couple of tips;

1. Make sure to leave room on either end of the stick exposed so that you can slide on the cake/cookie pop on one end and place the other into the fake ground where the Truffula Trees will stand.

2.  When wrapping the pipe cleaners, be certain to tuck the sharp edges on either end.

3.  There is no need to cut the pipe cleaners for shorter sticks, simply wrap a little tighter.

craft foam

To create the base, purchase a hard craft foam round that is found in the floral section of most crafting stores.  Secure it to a round tray with sticky tack and cut out green grass from construction paper.  Attach the grass at the seams with either sticky tack or you can, cautiously, use flat topped sewing pins.

wrapping grass

Fill in the top with green wrapping grass.

cake/cookie pops

Dip one end of the stick into melted white chocolate & then inserted the sticks into the cake pops.

melted chocolate

Coat the Truffula Tree tops with colored melted white chocolate.  Here’s the how to:

1. Place 6 oz of chocolate into a glass bowl at a time.

2. Microwave it on high for 1 minute.

3.  The chocolates will not look melted until you stir them thoroughly.

4.  Add wilton food coloring for your desired colors and stir until the color is evenly distributed.

Dip the cookies into the white chocolate and immediately place them into the foam ground to finish setting so that you don’t end up with one flattened side.  If you find the consistency difficult to dip, spread the white chocolate on to the tops with a butter knife.  Note: 6 oz. should cover 6 – 8 pops.

  9. Awesome recipe! I don’t have a food processor, but I improvised. I took all the Oreos out of the plastic, took the tray out, and put the Oreos back in and resealed it to crush them with my….food hammer?! I don’t know what it’s called, but easy and no mess :)
