It’s the holidays & the kitchen is getting busier than busy right along with the hectic hustle and bustle of the holiday schedule with concerts, shopping, gift wrapping, classroom parties and so much more. Here’s an idea that’s crafty, relatively inexpensive & something the kids can totally take charge of from start to finish. It’s a simple way to make & package colored popcorn for the holidays, which makes a great gift to share with classmates for upcoming parties or to share with family friends.
Food coloring (liquid, not gel)
Ziploc lunch sized bags
Place 1/4 cup of popcorn in Ziploc lunch sized bag and add 30 drops of your desired food coloring. Seal the bag, squish it around until all of the kernels are fully covered and let it set over night. Repeat this process with as many colors as desired in separate bags. You can also use larger bags if you want to make more colored popcorn of a color, just keep the measurements of 30 drops of food coloring for every 1/4 cup of popcorn.
The next day simply open each of the plastic bags so that the kernels air dry; typically only a couple of hours. You can also pour the colored popcorn on to a waxed paper covered baking sheet to air dry as well.
Packaging them Up: We found these adorable plastic light bulb shaped ornaments at our local craft store for $1 per piece. Each one held 1/4 cup of popcorn and we decided to fill them in a confetti fashion mixing all of the colorful kernels we made together. There are round plastic bulbs as well, but DO NOT use the glass crafting ornaments.
Popping the Popcorn: We then added a tag of holiday wishes & on the back placed a note we printed from the computer with popping instructions: Place the popcorn (1/4 cup) into a pan with 3 tablespoons of canola oil, vegetable oil, light olive oil or peanut oil. Cover & cook over medium to low heat until all of the kernels are popped; shake occasionally. Salt and serve. The popcorn will not pop in different colors, but you will find a colorful center to each kernel. Goes perfect with a family movie night! [googleplusauthor]
